2009 Chevrolet Camaro

GM represents the Camaro a two-door coupe with a big LS2 6.0-liter V-8 engine. If that sounds familiar, that's just what Ford did with the Mustang.

2009 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

The powerful Camaro concept is perfect '69 updated, with the sort of subtle detailing that makes it look up-to-the-minute. The 2009 edition shares a few of its design with the Pontiac G8

The interior is really glitzy, and gives homage to the original, even down to the GM seat belt insignia and the twinned instrument pods.
The auto is 186.2 ins long and wears a 110.5-inch wheelbase. The wheels are 21s at the front and 22s at the back, shod with giant 275/30 front and 305/30 back tires, which should be able to corral the 400 HP from the LS2 6.0-liter V-8 engine and a six-speed manual transmission. The show auto has a cobbled up chassis with an all-independent suspension, but for production version, it'll have the so-called Zeta Lite architecture that will be shared with Holden in Australia. The good news for GM is that the architecture while hardly cutting edge is way more advanced than the driving axle Mustang. $20,000 base model production car can  use a cheap V-8 (the LS2 will be in a more expensive model), so a V-6 edition will be provided just to make the automobile softer and secure. The real auto will have smaller wheels, but the overall diameter of the tires would not be very much altered. GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz obviously enjoys it and joked about the demonstrate stand "all I have to do is persuade this man" referring to GM CEO Rick Wagoner "to pay for it."

On 10 August 2006 was announced that GM would build an all-new version of the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car based on the award-winning concept car that debuted at the Detroit auto show in Jan 2006. The all-new Camaro was earlier scheduled to start out production at the end of 2008 and will come on sale in the 1st quarter of 2009 for the 2009 model year, but General Motors declared in March 2008 that production would be delayed until Feb 2009 with the Camaro coming on sale in the spring of 2009 for the 2010 model year. At first, the coupe will be released and will have an extended 2010 model year run. The convertible will come some months after the coupe and will also be available for the 2010 model year.

GM has confirmed that the production edition will feature a B-pillar,  unlike the concept vehicles which don't get the B-pillar in place. The Camaro will be constructed on the Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform, which also supports the 2008 Pontiac G8. GM confirmed that the Camaro will get an independent rear suspension, be provided with both V6 and V8 engines, and have automatic and manual transmissions.

And the Feb 16, 2009 is the date the hot 2010 Camaros will start heading down the assembly line at the Oshawa plant in Ontario. 2,750 jobs would have been lost at the Oshawa factory which had been earlier scheduled to be closed in 2008; some of these jobs will be delivered now due to the new Camaro's production. This new product program and conversion of the Oshawa factory to a progressive flexible manufacturing facility is a $740 million investment, with preparatory work beginning right away.

For those seeking a convertible Camaro, you'll have to wait until Monday, December 7, 2009 - a bit late for the 2009 convertible season in northern climates. Search them to start coming out at dealers in late Dec or early Jan depending on where you are in the U.S..
